Her career goal is to work as an entertainment publicist.

s Aa senior Journalism major at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill I know the importance of internships and networking. For me – a student aiming for a career in Public Relations, the question is: how do I find mentors and gain valuable experience that can help me in my upcoming career – now, versus later after I graduate?

But I need more than experience

Public Relations is a competitive field, with entry-level PR jobs requiring at least one year of work experience. The industry is filled with great communicators and driven professionals – all vying for the jobs that I want. I must find a way to stand out.

These were things I was extremely concerned about and when I met UNC-Chapel Hill alum and filmmaker, Ashley Maria. Ashley is a director working on the 2016 documentary film Pioneers in Skirts, a film about young women pioneering in their careers. I was invited to work with Ashley and her Co-Producer Lea-Ann W. Berst, and since May 2015 I’ve been volunteering to help drive up awareness for the film and the activities surrounding it.

It’s been an amazing opportunity for my career

As a public relations volunteer for Pioneers in Skirts I have gained invaluable insight into the Entertainment industry for which I hope to one-day work as a Publicist. I’ve learned how to reach out and engage with successful professionals — two of which are Deidre Breakenridge CEO of Pure Performance Communications and Kat Cole Group President of Focus Brands. Thanks to Pioneers in Skirts, I was able to reach out to these extraordinary women; creating and nurturing a relationship that I think will help me set myself apart in my career.

Lessons learned

  • When reaching out to connect with someone, be persistent – but give them space
During my conversation with Ms. Cole she mentioned to me that Director Ashley Maria and Co-Producer Lea-Ann W. Berst had done a great job of reaching out to her about her involvement with Pioneers in Skirts. Ms. Cole said that while she would love to be able to participate in every opportunity that is presented to her, she simply does not have the time. Therefore she complimented Pioneers in Skirts for reaching out to her through social media in a persistent matter while not being too aggressive. I learned there is a fine line one must be aware of when trying to persuade someone to be a part of your initiative. Be sure to reach out with a clear message, be persistent while not being overly forceful. Ms. Cole commended the Pioneers in Skirts team on the way in which they conducted themselves and convinced her that Pioneers in Skirts was a film she would want to be a part of.
  • Never underestimate the power of politeness
Growing up in the South, I have always known the importance of being polite to all those who I come in contact with. Never take for granted the time and advice someone gives you.
  • Do not expect anything, but be grateful for everything a professional shares with you
It is the little things I have found that make more of a positive impact in my career.
  • Always send a thank you note
Be sure to take the time to thank them for their time and for sharing their insights with you.
  • Nurturing a relationship does not mean you need to offer, or ask someone for something
In fact, I recommend you do not. Nurture relationships by reaching out to mentors and professionals to check in, tell them what you are working on and ask how they are doing. If you reach out and stay in contact you will remain relevant in their mind as someone to watch.
  • Never underestimate any opportunity
In August 2015 I took advantage of a special “backer reward” option offered during the Pioneers in Skirts Kickstarter campaign. In support of the film, Ms. Cole had agreed to be a “backer reward” that would allow backers to speak her about any topic for thirty minutes. In invested in my future and purchased the reward! Making sure I made the most of this unique opportunity to speak with such an impressive woman, I researched Ms. Cole and thought of questions I wanted to know as a student who was preparing to graduate. After our conversation I reached out and connected with Ms. Cole on LinkedIn and Twitter. I also sent her, and her assistant, a thank you email.
  • Be gracious and grateful for every opportunity
I met Ms. Breakenridge early on in my involvement with Pioneers in Skirts. I reached out to her via Twitter to ask for advice on how I could improve upon my role with the film. She immediately responded, and has been extremely supportive of the film, and me, since. I will always be extremely grateful to Ms. Cole and Ms. Breakenridge for allowing me the opportunity to connect with them, and learn from their success.

When seeking out mentors…

During my initial “backer reward” conversation with Ms. Cole she gave me wonderful advice in regards to finding and keeping mentorships. She said, “Look for mentoring moments,” meaning it is unrealistic to expect every opportunity to turn into a mentorship. So, rather than trying to learn all you can from one or two successful people, seek out mini-mentors; people you can learn from in individual and unique work-life situations.

Since working with the film — a film about achieving personal success in life and in career, I’ve learned a lot about who my mini-mentors are. I’ve improved upon how I seek them out — and most certainly, I’ve learned a lot about myself. Pioneers in Skirts aims to help women of today, and of tomorrow. I am extremely happy to be an early recipient of that aim![/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]

We’re Up for Indiewire Project of the Month!

Project of the Month, Indiewire

…which would be a huge win for our film!!

In September we had another huge win when we completed a successful Kickstarter campaign. Not only did the Kickstarter bring in the funds we needed to finish production on the film, and begin the efforts of transitioning into post-production — the Kickstarter also brought more eyes on the film itself.

But, we need a lot more eyes on the film. The winner of this voting contest receives an Indiewire-written story about their documentary film. Big influential eyes will be on the film — which means there will be opportunities to raise more funds to finish the film, increased awareness of the topic and the film, and more distribution options that can lead to more eyes seeing the film when it’s done!

If you’d like to help us better prepare today and tomorrow’s working woman for the careers they are working so hard to have — please vote!

A couple of suggestions for approaching people in person…

If you’re in a coffee shop and see a person you’d like to meet but you’re not sure what to say – walk over and ask them to vote!

If you’re in an office, get everyone at your office to vote. But don’t stop there. Awkwardly stand over them as they do it.

This will be a tough race to win, so please vote – and don’t forget, you can use ALL your email accounts to score even more votes!

Pioneer on!

What It Means To Be Picked As An Indiewire Project

IndieWire Featuring Pioneers in Skirts

When it comes to gender equity in the workplace, many people think that working women are much further along than they really are. With all that is being written and said about the need for women to get a fair shake in their careers, and with the abundance of studies and popular movements the press is eager to cover, it’s not only surprising that people aren’t as aware of the issues as they should be, it’s shocking there hasn’t been a resolution to the problem.

An inspiring story of women pioneering in their careers, Pioneers in Skirts™ features relatable storylines, as well as impactful strategies women and men both can use to deal with, and improve upon, the challenges that working women face today.

Ashley and Lea-Ann attending the White House summitWe’ve had some amazing “ups”

We started the pre-production phase of the film late in 2012, and since then we’ve had some pretty amazing things happen. We were honored to represent the film at a White House Summit, be asked to speak at corporate women’s groups, become part of the news, and land some incredible on-camera interviews with some of the most dynamic and brilliant people.

The “downs” are unreal

But what we hear all the time is… “I’m tired of hearing about women’s issues.” “Women just need to stop whining and stop getting in their own way.” — from women and men.

Sadly, we often feel we need to prove there really is a problem that needs to be fixed. Instead of focusing all of our time on making a film that aims to change things for the better, we need to also explain why all the books and Ted Talks out there are great…but are not always relatable, and not always enough.

Snapshot of Indiewire front pageThen, Indiewire announces they picked Pioneers in Skirts as their Project-of-the-Day. What’s so big about that? Well, when Indiewire throws your film out to the world, on their home page…just above the “Back to the Future” coolness, it’s real.

We were recognized as filmmakers trying to make a film.

Thanks Indiewire. We needed that :-).

What’s next?

On Friday, Indiewire will post all films they picked during the week so that people can vote for Project-of-the-Week. The winner is then in the running for Project-of-the-Month. That winner receives a feature story and is eligible for Project-of-the-Year.

The Project-of-the-Year winner for 2015 will get bragging rights, a story announcing the news and the chance to attend The TFI Filmmaker and Industry Meetings during the Tribeca Film Festival in April 2016.

Okay, that would be incredible.

But really, Project-of-the-Day is much appreciated.

HOW THIS WOMAN-CENTRIC FILM REACHED ITS KICKSTARTER GOAL

PIONEERS IN SKIRTS ® — DGA-award winning Director Ashley Maria and Producer Lea-Ann Berst are celebrating a successful finish of a month-long Kickstarter campaign. Funds raised will allow them to finish production and move onto the editing of Pioneers in Skirts, the documentary film advancing the conversation about women going after a career.

Pioneers in Skirts is a groundbreaking documentary film. Following a life-changing realization about her own career as a woman shortly after she graduated with her Masters in film, cameras have accompanied Ashley on an intimate journey to discover why women still face unique biases and societal pressures in their careers today. The team is investigating to find out why this happens and the strategies to overcome.

Through her travels, Ashley has interviewed some of the nation’s top female and male leaders who share their experiences and lessons-learned.  The film follows compelling young women who are just now realizing their dreams for their future and a new mother trying to make sense of the so called “mommy penalties” she is experiencing.

231 backers put Ashley and Lea-Ann beyond their $50,000 goal. When the 30-day campaign ended, their total funding came to $50,176.

The Kickstarter goal had to be reached by Sept. 19th at 11:59pm PST.

Described as a “nail-biter” moment, just three hours before the deadline the filmmakers were still ~$4000 short of their goal.

“I rushed home from a film set in Los Angeles,” says Ashley, “and it was already midnight for Lea-Ann in North Carolina. Over the past 30 days we had been working around the clock to bring in more supporters and encourage others to phone, email, and post on social media to help us.”

The team also worked to drive up buzz via article/blogs/podcast interviews and develop videos that informed and engaged, like:
– meeting a funding challenge that involved singing with a superhero character on Hollywood Blvd
– debuting a 360 viewing experience explaining “why this film, why now”
– several behind-the-scenes clips, and introducing future mascots.

“It was now the final hours,” stated Ashley. “All we had left to do was hope – and keep posting live videos and comments on social media.”

Beginning at 10pm, Ashley posted Periscope live videos, tweeted and posted a play-by-play on Facebook. The social media posts proved to help because in the last few hours, much-needed large pledges came through which then triggered smaller pledges to make up the difference.

Gratitude for the support

“I owe my greatest gratitude to the team around me. People from all over the U.S. have volunteered their time to help us make this film – some who have been a consistent presence of support [fusion_builder_container hundred_percent=”yes” overflow=”visible”][fusion_builder_row][fusion_builder_column type=”1_1″ background_position=”left top” background_color=”” border_size=”” border_color=”” border_style=”solid” spacing=”yes” background_image=”” background_repeat=”no-repeat” padding=”” margin_top=”0px” margin_bottom=”0px” class=”” id=”” animation_type=”” animation_speed=”0.3″ animation_direction=”left” hide_on_mobile=”no” center_content=”no” min_height=”none”][you can see who these amazing people are on our Meet the Team page] and some who heard about the Kickstarter and reached out to help make the campaign a success. Many sent personal emails to their friends and family asking for pledges,” stated Ashley. “People that we never met reached out to their colleagues to recommend us for stories and interviews. And in the last hours, they were up late with me too. I could see them shouting on social media to make sure we made our goal!!”

From the women and men who were featured or interviewed for the film, to friends, family and total strangers – backers stepped forward to send the message of, “Let’s finish this film!”

Women’s groups

Among their backers were numerous members of the North Carolina Business and Professional Women’s organization – and the organization itself. The leadership team rallied behind the Pioneers in Skirts Kickstarter in support of their two members – Ashley and Lea-Ann. Several other women’s organizations stepped up to promote the campaign to their members, including the SAP Business Women’s Network, IEEE Women in Engineering, and the SAS Women’s Initiative Network.

“It was humbling to see how many women had our back,” shared Lea-Ann Berst. “It also affirmed to us we were making a film that women and men both wanted to see, and needed.”

Industry leaders

KickstarterSupportBradFeldOpting for the Executive Producer Kickstarter reward, Brad Feld of the Foundry Group stepped forward early on in the campaign to not only support the fundraising effort, but he often asked his colleagues and followers to make a pledge too.

“When we were strategizing about high-dollar rewards that would represent the essence of our mission for the film, we reached out to three of our interviewees and received an immediate ‘YES,” explained Lea-Ann. “Three industry experts – Kat Cole with Focus Brands, Brad Feld with Foundry Group, and Sarah Bird with Moz agreed to be a Kickstarter reward; speaking to a $500 backer for 30 minutes about any business or career topic. We knew these brilliant business leaders didn’t have much free time in their lives…so we knew their ‘Yes’ meant they believe in us. That just means the world to Ashley and me.”

Prior to launching the Kickstarter, vendors stepped forward to lend a hand! Julie Powsner with Adpro created and donated the “I’m a Pioneer” tech stickers and mobile phone pockets. Jane Park with Julep donated deluxe manicure kits and nail polish so that the filmmakers can offer an “It-Girl Glam” reward package.

Press-ready

Prior to the launch of the Kickstarter the filmmakers lined up initial backers and they lined up the press. “Previously, we were brushed off as a no-news item because the film wasn’t yet complete,” noted Ashley. “But the minute we launched our Kickstarter campaign, the press were open to learning more about us and our story. We ended up receiving a ton of press!”

Pioneers in Skirts was ready with a press-friendly website that would allow the media to learn more about the film, its background story, and download images and videos for their stories.

Pioneers in Skirts Media webpage

“We’re excited Gravitate came in when they did,” said Lea-Ann. “One month before the launch of the campaign, Gravitate stepped forward as our website sponsor. A global digital marketing and design agency with proven cross-industry expertise, Gravitate advised us as to what we needed and worked overtime to launch our new website before the Kickstarter. We were ready to impress!”

What’s next?

The filmmakers plan to use the raised funds to finish up topic-expert interviews and Ashley’s personal story line as a director in the film industry, as well as continue the transcribing process of footage and then move into a full-time editing work effort. “We have a lot of footage and need a dedicated editor to work through it,” said Ashley. “I am so excited to have the funds now to hire an editor full-time while we finish filming!”

If you missed out on the Kickstarter, the filmmakers still need financial and in-kind help to finish the film!
