Hard drives, hard drives, everywhere. But not one has the file I’m looking for!

Friends, tonight was the night of all hard drives. I was re-editing our Kickstarter video so it would act as our new promotional video (minus the mention of Kickstarter) and needed just one video file that I could not find. I did find every hard drive I have ever used in the last 6 months. But could not find that file. Which made me question its very existence, and then really all existence. Why are we here? Why do we save files if they aren’t going to be there when we return?

Okay, so maybe I didn’t have that file that I so wished to find. It really didn’t change much in regards to the video – it’s more about the mission. And, what I did find, made the night worth it.

Packed away on a drive in the back of my shelving unit is the footage I took in 2012 with my grandpa. He was sick but wanted to drive to see the family in NC anyways for Thanksgiving. At the same time, I had won a filmmaking contest which gave me two free roundtrip tickets on Southwest Airlines. I used that free ticket to jump on a plane the next day for NC to be with my family. We had just started filming for Pioneers in Skirts, so I had borrowed a camera to use over the holiday. I filmed the family listening to an old record my grandmother had recorded for my grandfather during Vietnam. You can hear my mom goo-gooing (baby talk) in the background.
