BPW

 "Pioneers in Skirts"

Business and Professional Women (BPW) History:

The BPW journey began when the U.S. Government, while mobilizing for World War I, recognized the need for a cohesive group to coordinate identification of women’s available skills and experience. A Women’s War Council, financed through a federal grant, was established by the War Department to organize the resources of professional women. As a result, the National Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs was founded on July 15, 1919 – and soon after in the same year the North Carolina and then Raleigh local club were formed.

BPW has been a driving force behind significant national legislation, such as the War Classification Act (1923), the Equal Pay Act (1963), the Civil Rights Act (1964), the Federal Jury Selection and Service Act (1968), the Educational Equity Act (1974), and the Retirement Equity Act (1983).

BPW/Raleigh was also founded in 1919. With a mission to promote the professional and personal growth of their members, BPW/Raleigh works to empower women through networking, education and development.

NARRATIVE

In August, I am traveling back to North Carolina (NC) to produce and direct a documentary about the BPW organization; and, more specifically, the NC state organization and the local club in Raleigh, NC. I will focus on its history, its members, and what's next for the organization.

I am honored to interview long-time BPW member, Dr. Lois Frazier, who became a member in 1945. Dr. Frazier has held local, state and national leadership roles within the organization. As an educator, Dr. Frazier played a major role in the effort to create the MBA program at
Meredith College.

She paved the way as a business and professional woman before there were business and professional women.

In addition to Dr. Frazier, I will interview members from past and present in a "tea-time circle" atmosphere to encourage true discussion about the struggles and triumphs of the organization and women in professional positions and in business.

SCREENING

The feature screening of "Pioneers in Skirts" will be in June at the BPW Statewide Convention.

WHY THIS FILM & WHY NOW?

BPW has been a part of my life since I was in high school; living in Raleigh, NC. Since moving to Los Angeles to pursue a master's degree in filmmaking at USC, the organization has awarded me with the Elsie G. Riddick Scholarship for my work as a female filmmaker in a male-dominated field.

It was such an honor to be recognized by BPW, and now I want to give back. My goal for this film is to build awareness of the organization and its pivotal role in our society. BPW encourages an open environment for women to discuss their relative experiences in today's corporate and professional world - an opportunity most women don't have.

I encourage every woman to find her local BPW club. Whether you are entering the workforce for the first time, re-entering, or looking for a refreshing change; this organization's support is unparalleled.
